Breast Augmentation (Breast Implants) in Los Angeles, CA

What is Breast Augmentation?

Many women experience loss of volume of their breasts during their lifetime as a result of pregnancy, weight loss, breastfeeding, or simply aging. The shape and volume of your breasts make a big difference in terms of how you feel about your appearances, your confidence, and how you dress. All of those factors can be improved with breast augmentation from internationally recognized breast surgery expert Dr. Jaime Schwartz.

You can feel confident that your surgeon is a leading authority on breast reconstruction techniques within the plastic surgery profession and has contributed to establishing high standards and protocols for women’s health care. With an academic background from Georgetown University where he focused on breast cancer reconstruction, Dr. Schwartz now trains other plastic surgeons and lectures nationwide. His patients come from all over the world to benefit from his expertise. Take a look at our breast augmentation before and after pictures and see the standard-setting results Dr. Schwartz produces.

Your Breast Augmentation Consultation

During your breast augmentation consultation, you will get the chance to feel the different types of implant sizes and even see how they would look on you. Dr. Schwartz will have you try on various implant sizers in front of a mirror to help you get an idea of how you will look following your surgery.

When determining what implant would be most appropriate to use, there are many factors that should be taken into consideration. Your consultation is vital for allowing him to understand your goals and expectations for this procedure. After discussing your goals and desired outcomes from your breast augmentation, Dr. Schwartz will examine you so that he can take into account your frame and natural shape.

Precise measurements will be taken of your breasts and your chest wall to help Dr. Schwartz determine the optimal type and size of implant that will best complement your frame and meet your aesthetic goals. This will be an active consultation, which you should come away from feeling confident that you are both on the same page regarding what your goals are for the procedure.

Breast augmentations and lifts are both powerful procedures in their own right, but many women find it even more effective to combine the two for maximum rejuvenation of the breasts with just one surgery and recovery period. During your consultation, Dr. Schwartz will help you find the right treatment or combination of treatments to achieve your overall goals.

Is Breast Augmentation Right For Me?

You want to look like yourself, only better. If you are seeking a natural looking enhancement of your breast volume, upper pole fullness, and visible cleavage, then a breast augmentation might be the best procedure for you.

Dr. Schwartz is known throughout the world for his natural looking breast augmentation results. As a rule, Dr. Schwartz recommends avoiding the “side breast” fullness that is often associated with a more artificial appearance and recommends silicone to give you fullness at the top (upper pole fullness) or anatomic gummy bear implants, which can be a good choice to give you more volume.

Types of Implants

Gummy bear implants offer a look that more closely resembles the natural silhouette of a breast and, therefore, are a very attractive option for individuals seeking a natural-looking breast augmentation. Additionally, these implants are an excellent option for patients undergoing restorative or corrective breast surgery because they provide more stability, shape and reduced incidence of capsular contracture. Compared to other types of silicone gel implants, the silicone in the cohesive gel implant is more cross-linked and therefore, should the implant shell “rupture,” it maintains its shape and silicone does not leak.

Breast Implants

Your primary choice is between saline and silicone implants. Within the category of silicone implants, there is a choice between round and shaped (cohesive gel) silicone implants. A consultation can help to decide which implant choice is the most appropriate option for you. Please see the descriptions of implants choices below:

  • Saline Implants

Saline implants are placed deflated, then filled with a saline solution during surgery. They are adjustable and, because they are inserted deflated, they require a smaller incision. However, many women do not like the way they feel, as they are the firmest implants available and have the highest risk of rippling. One aspect of the saline implant that some women may like is that if the implant ruptures, it just deflates, and you know immediately.

  • Round Silicone Implants

Silicone implants come pre-filled with a silicone gel and are the softest implant available. They feel more natural, which makes them a good option for women with less natural breast tissue; but they require a larger incision. It may be more difficult to realize if this type of implant has ruptured, so it is important to monitor them with annual follow-up visits. Additionally, because this implant contains a more liquid silicone (less cross-linked), if this implant should rupture, it will leak only into the scar capsule formed around the implant but may cause some discomfort or implant distortion.

  • Cohesive Gel Implants

Dr. Schwartz is an expert surgeon and national educator on the use of cohesive gel (“Gummy Bear”) implants. These highly-sought-after, anatomic implants offer a look that more closely resembles the natural silhouette of a breast, and, therefore, are a very attractive option for individuals seeking a natural-looking, aesthetic primary breast augmentation. Additionally, these implants are an especially excellent option for patients undergoing restorative or corrective breast surgery because they provide more stability, shape, and reduced incidence of capsular contracture. Compared to other types of silicone gel implants, the silicone in the cohesive gel implant is more cross-linked; therefore, should the implant shell “rupture,” it maintains its shape and silicone does not leak.

Because of their shape, these implants require precision measurements to find the implant that best fits your frame and are more difficult to position during surgery. Dr. Schwartz lectures across the country on the use and safety of these implants.

Are Breast Implants Permanent?

Breast implants are not intended to last forever. The FDA recommends removal of breast implants with/without replacement at 15-years. We advise that you begin thinking about exchanging them around 10 years after placement.

What Is Capsular Contracture?

When any device is placed inside the body, whether a knee, hip, or breast, your body naturally forms a capsule or scar around it. A complication that can occur with breast implants is the development of a thick, tight scar around the implant; this is called capsular contracture. There are several treatments Dr. Schwartz uses to prevent or correct capsular contracture.

What Is Animation Deformity?

Animation deformity, also known as muscle flexion distortion, can occur with implants placed under the muscle. The name refers to implants that appear fine most of the time but are extremely visible to the point of distorting the breast when the chest is flexed. It is a result of the pectoral muscle adhering to the implant. To correct this complication, a revision surgery to release the muscle is required.

What Effect Does Smoking Have On The Healing Process After Surgery?

Nicotine causes blood vessels to constrict. This reduces the blood supply and oxygen to the surgical area. Sufficient blood supply is required for tissues to heal, so when the blood supply is reduced, delayed healing and, possibly, tissue death occurs. While it is best for your overall health not to use tobacco products, if you do use tobacco products, we ask that you refrain from using them for a minimum of 6 weeks before and after surgery.

Is It Possible To Have A Breast Augmentation Without Implants?

Yes, fat grafting can be used to enhance a breast augmentation with implants, or it can be used alone to create a modest increase in breast volume. This procedure harvests fat from unwanted areas of the body, typically the abdomen, flanks, and thighs, and transfers it to the breasts. Generally, an increase breast size by a half to a full cup can be accomplished with this surgery, and it can be repeated for greater results. A consultation can guide you in determining if you are a candidate and if this is an appropriate method for you. (See Breast Augmentation with Fat Grafting)

What is Rapid Recovery™ Breast Augmentation?

Thanks to Rapid Recovery™ most of our patients are able to go out to dinner the next night after their breast augmentation. How is this possible?

Rapid Recovery™ is a term used to describe the techniques Dr. Jaime Schwartz uses to accelerate the recovery process after your breast augmentation.

The most important part of Rapid Recovery™ starts with anesthesia. Dr. Schwartz uses a gentler form of general anesthesia called TIVA, which stands for total intravenous anesthesia. Our breast augmentation patients are given an IV with medication that puts them in an adequate state of anesthesia without requiring a breathing tube or anesthetic gases. You are essentially asleep for the duration of the procedure, but breathing on your own. Since TIVA medications wear off quickly and are typically out of the body in a few hours, you are less likely to feel nauseous after the procedure. In fact, the IV medication used to accomplish this has an anti-nausea effect. This results in a shorter time in the recovery room, as well as an overall smoother experience.

Another component of Rapid Recovery™ is minimizing the discomfort of surgery. Dr. Schwartz may achieve this by injecting BOTOX® into the muscles of the chest prior to surgery, and using EXPAREL® (a long-acting local anesthetic) placed into the muscles during surgery.

We do not prescribe opioids. Most of our patients take only TYLENOL® after their breast augmentation procedure. Most patients can return to work after one week, and you may be able to resume some exercise after four weeks and full exercise at six weeks.

We pride ourselves on our state of the art protocols to minimize discomfort, and you will feel the support from Dr. Schwartz’s nurses and team, which will be available to you 24/7 after your breast augmentation. As you and Dr. Schwartz develop your plan of treatment together, he will give you precise information on what to expect in terms of your recovery. Dr. Schwartz accepts all forms of payment and offers excellent financing options to make more procedures available to more patients.
